Work Ambiance

September 7, 2009 Leave a Comment

So sure, I’m laboring today, no biggie. But I just don’t know what to listen to while I’m working. Had various tunes on all morning so far… eh, done with that. TV? blahblah news channel? movie? Can’t be too interesting of a movie or I’ll get distracted or not pay attention, what’s the sense… maybe I’ll just go with HGTV. Sometimes ears pick up something interesting and I’ll look over at the tv.

Yes, quite often, especially first thing in the a.m. I go for the silence. Engages all brain cells better with that 1st cuppa in quiteness.

OHhhhh, I’m sure I’ll figure something out. ’tis my day, my routine, my space…
Have a good one!

Set up your work day with the right atmosphere…

August 3, 2009 2 Comments

nag champaI’ve always been a very tactile person… sensual. Not sensual in the bedroom kind of sensual, but I like to experience my surroundings by touch, smell, sound & visually. So it’s no surprise (and you guys probably know this about me by now) that to get into my “back-to-work” mode, I have the incense burning, t.v. on in the background (it’s comforting to me), a tidy desk, and a fresh pot o’ coffee brewing.

I also read my morning quote from Ralph… how appropriate is it today? While it may not fit my day perfectly, I always take away something from what he has to say. Yup, positive reinforcements.

Then there’s that other part of me… not sensual, inspired or motivated… just that evil twin o’ mine—the Procrastinator!

So. With that said, I’d better get my ass in gear and get to work!

Amazing & healthy

You know, since we haven’t chatted for so long, I didn’t show you one of my most recent client sites.

Dr. Fitness & the Fat Guy

Dr. Fitness & the Fat Guy has so much info on the site (especially on their blog), it amazes me that they haven’t run out of things to post in the 4 yrs or so that they’ve been around. The site was a blast to design… fun stuff (gotta check out the free ebook do-hicky), and they really are a couple of cool guys. yee-haw!

2 days left to play

July 31, 2009 1 Comment

I cleared my palette of work the week of Jennie’s wedding, as well as the following week when she moved. I have 2 more days left to play.

I really shouldn’t wait for “vacation” to tend to my own web stuff, ya know? But I don’t take the time to do those necessary things… I know I’ve said this before.

Balance. I need balance. Seems like everything has to be to the extreme so often. You’d think I’d know by now.

ANYway, for those of you not on Facebook , here’s a photo of my beautiful baby girl and her new hubby.
Mrs. Jennie Quinn

It was a magical day!

The web, the press, and work

July 6, 2009 1 Comment

I’ve been working a lot these days and predominantly within the WordPress platform—for clients. Along with a plethora of new plugins, templates and WP upgrades, I am feeling the need to write & post stuff that I’m discovering along the way. Like right now.

First of all, I would love to spend some time on my own sites. I need to upgrade this blog. But until I do, I want to write about something that I honestly don’t want to forget, but don’t have anywhere to store it. I am certainly not going to count on my brain to remember everything that I’m thinking about right now!

So one of the things that I’m working on for a client requires that I look up people. Grab a photo of them and a brief bio, along with their web site address. It’s frustrating to find the web site and to not get access to a good photo as well as a snip of their bio. Must remember the following…

If you are promoting yourself via a web site, please have the following available for visitors:

  • A good, downloadable photo of yourself. Yes I know that’s subjective but at least have one outside of the header, not in Flash, and is fairly recent.
  • Ditto with your bio. Don’t make the text a graphic (or in Flash). If I have to transcribe a paragraph from an image to text, I am not happy and will make it as brief and probably less interesting than if I could copy and paste it from your site into mine.
  • Think like a reporter in search of a story. Make it as convenient and as easy as possible for busy people to grab your info. If I am on a deadline and must make a choice between Story A or Story B, I will choose the one that requires the least amount editing for me as well as the most interesting story for my readers. Hopefully that would be one and the same story.
  • Post the above info on your Bio web page with a link to a printable pdf file that is posted on a Press/Media page. That would be ideal and a reporter’s dream.

That is what I want to remember. Yes, common sense.

A perfect example of everything that I mentioned is on Lisa Daily’s web site. In my opinion she has covered all bases and it is visible on her Media Page. Lisa definitely knows what she’s doing.

Must get back to work… in fact I need to “practice what I preach.” My own biz site doesn’t have an ideal bio… :::GASP:::

Better git busy!
